TOPICS OF THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTES. (Resident Representative.) , The fifth birthday gathering of the Hangatiki branch ot the Women’s Institute was largely attended, the hall being specially decorated, as is the custom at the annual birthdays. The president, Mrs Board, and the vjeepresident, Mir Pettigrew, received thfe visiting guests and representatives of various branches ot the Women’s Division. The new banner and cup were on display, and proceedings commenced with the singing ot . the, Institute's song, "Comrades and Friends.’' Mrs Robson, president of the Waikato Federation of Women's Institutes, addressed the gathering iq' a very helpful and interesting manner. Two amusing sketches were produced, in which visitors from Otorohanga and Maugapeehi materially assisted. Mesdamcs Bidwell, Stilwell and Board, past, and present presidents, officiated- at the ceremony of cutting tlie cake. Some very .generous parcels and gifts were received on behalf oi the Makogai leper Christmas gift fund. The Institute’s reputation for a bountiful afternoon tea spread was welt maintained, and tfiq tables were beautifully decorated with seasonal blooms. Competitions and games were enjoyed, the winners receiving small prizes. A happy and friendly afternoon was concluded with the singing of "Auld Syae," and the National Anthem. The last meeting of the Mangaokewa branch ot the Women's Institute was Held at the residence of Mrs Dickenson. Tlierp was a large attendance, presided over by Mrs Cathie. Proceedings opened with the Institute's song and creed. The debate, "That husbands and wives 'take their holidays together when possible,” caused much interest, and some amusement. After the general business of the meeting a dainty afternoon tea was served. This branch is steadily growing in membership. ' - CONCERT PARTY. - Tentative arrangements are now being made for a visit here, next month, at the band and concert party from the Auckland Jubilee Institute for tlie Blind, who greatly pleased large audiences during a previous trip to the King Country some years ago. CLAY BIRD SHOOTING. The Otorohanga Gun Club was represented at the match at Morrinsvillc, when six South Auckland gun clubs competed for the R. T. Reid Cup, a challenge event for teams of seven men, shooting 15 clay birds, all off 16 yards. The Otorohanga shootists were Messrs M. Pratt, T, McCready, W. Seymour, M. Otway, F. Hyde, A. j. McCready and W. Holmes. This team finished fourth witli_ a'total I of 82. The Reid Cup was won by Hamilton. In the gimcrack event.-ot . 7 birds, M. Pratt and M. Otway (Oto- 1 ' rohanga) shot the possible and divided witli three others, W. J. McMiken, A. Aitken and J. McMullan. There were 22 competitors. Otway shot the possible (and divided with others the stakes) in the first 9 bird handicap. Windy weather conditions upset the shooting of some prominent marksmen.
