AN ARTIFICIAL BOOM
STATE COMPETITION IN BUILDING. The building industry has provideda great labour market in the past, and the truth of this can be shown by the tragic increase of unemployment among workers in the industry when the depression brought building practically to a standstill. In these circumstances it is only reasonable that the industry, as an employer of labour, should be given a fair chance to benefit by whatever good times may be coming. The Government should not become a competitor with a private building enterprise until it can be shown that its housing programme is going to be so unwisely vast that private joinery manufacturers have no hope of satisfying the demand. But if the demand is going to be reasonable and no more, there can be no cause for intrusion on the part of the State. If there is going to be an artifinancial building boom private enterprise should be given every chance to share in it.—Christchurch Press.
