Misses E. Jeffery and L. Potts have left on a holiday trip to centres in the Wellington province.
Miss F. Gormann, who has been an inmate of a local private hospital for an appendicitis'operation, is now progressing favourably towards recovery.
Mr A. L. Flux, a Te Kuiti district farmer, has been appointed a farm appraiser under the State Advances Mortgage Corporation. He will be stationed at Taumarunui, and will take up his duties shortly.-
The engagement is announced of Catherine Mary third daughter of Mr and the late Mrs Otto Fleischfresser, of Benair, Kingaray, Queensland, and Eric Patrick, younger son of Mrs M. F. Lee, of Otorohanga.
The engagement is announced between Edith Fanny, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs F. Bird, of Pirongia, to Carl Lyle, youngest son of Mrs R. E. Cochrane, of Ngahinapouri, and the late Mr A. Newdick, of Hamilton.
The death occurred in Cambridge on Thursday morning of Mrs Mary Dunbar, widow of the late Mr George A. Dunbar, of “Wainui,” Pukekura. It was her 70th birthday. Mrs Dunbar had lived in the Cambridge district for 30 years and was universally esteemed.
Mrs F. J. Ryburn, South Auckland president of the Women’s Division, with Mesdames W. Godfrey and H. P. Hall, hon, organisers, are at present visiting the Raglan, Te Mata and Aotea districts, in the interests of Division. With them is Sister Stringer, representing the N.Z. Red Cross Society.
The Rev. E. O. Blamires, secretary of the N.Z. Bible in Schools League, will be visiting Te Awamutu during the week-end, and we understand he is to take the services of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in the morning, at Pokuru in the afternoon, and at the Methodist Church in the evening.
Arrangements have been completed for the Minister of Finance and Marketing, Hon. W. Nash, to leave New Zealand on 13th October on his way to England, where he will conduct reciprocal trade negotiations on behalf of New Zealand 'with 'the British Government. Mr Nash will leave Auckland by the Aorangi, travel over Canada and the United States, and join the Cunard-White Star liner Queen Mary in New York, arriving in England on 9th November.
The retirement of Mr G. C. Godfrey, Commissioner of Transport, on account of ill-health, is announced by the Minister of Transport, Hon. R. Semple. Mr Godfrey is to be succeeded by Mr George Laurenson, who is at present assistant - commissioner. The Minister said that Mr Godfrey would relinquish his duties in a few days, Cabinet having agreed to the conditions of his retirement because of bad health. Mr Godfrey would retire with three months’ leave of absence, and it was not until that period had expired that Mr Laurenson could be officially appointed. In the meantime Mr Laurenson would act as commissioner.
