ADVANCE OF SCIENCE
HOPE FOR THE CANCERSTRICKEN. “We have to spread among the people the knowledge that they must not be afraid of the disease, and that when they know that there is a chance of something which they have developing into that dreaded disease, they must at the earliest, stage have it examined and dealt with, and that if that is done, they can be cured; but that if they leave it and hush it up, as many do when they are foolish women or still more foolish men, as is often the case, there is the danger that it will have gone too far, and there will be disaster. We must drive that knowledge home, and in that connection I would point out the necessity, especially after middle-age, of having occasional medical overhauls. An occasional overhaul, not necessarily every year, but every now and again, is one of the best ways of preserving one’s life, especially so far as malignant disease or heart disease is concerned.” Sir Charles Gordon Watson, senior surgeon at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London.
