OTOROHANGA NEWS

ITEMS OF INTEREST. ERADICATION OF RAGWORT. (Our Resident Representative.) Last week Mr A. H. Cockayne, Di-rector-General of Agriculture, conferred with the Otorohanga County Council in reference to the eradication of ragwont. After considerable discussion the County Council passed a resolution assuming- responsibility for the administration of the Noxious Weeds Acti, 1928, as from September 21st, 1936. It was decided to test out the gang- system, a gang- to comprise 10 men with a foreman in charge,, the charge per day to the farmer to be £2 15s payable in advance. The £2 15s is to include sodium chlorate, and lime at the rate of -cwt per man per day, also transport, administration and insurance. The county has purchased a limited amount of sodium chlorate, for sale, particulars of which are advertised. Despite huge former outlays in connection with ragwort eradication within the county, the plant is still a menace to valuable, farm, lands. GU ( N CLUB’S SHOOT. Otorohanga was represented at the Hamilton Gun Club clay bird shooting contest at Ruakura on Saturday, when M. Pratt (Otorohanga), W. J. McMiken and L. Maher equalled in the five pairs double rise. Pratt was on a 16yds handicap. MILITARY BALL. The Otorohanga .and district Territorials held their annual ball in the local Municipal Hall last (Tuesday) night, when there was a capacity attendance from near and far afield. Many patrons were present from Te Awamutu, Hamilton, Te Kuiti, Taumarunui and Kawhia. The hall was snkmdidly decorated for the occasion, the regimental colours predominating. The banquet was an elaborate affair —ho less than 27 turkeys being disposed of by the great assemblage. The orchestral music was pleasing to the dancers, whilst the various M.’sC. carried out their onerous duties without a hitch. The uniforms of the men blended very harmoniously with the pretty frocks of the ladies, producing a most pleasing effect and thus promoting what was popularly voted the very best military ball yet held at Otorohanga.
