NOT BRUCE’S REMAINS?
DUNFERMLINE ABBEY THEORY. The opinion that the remains discovered in the churchyard of Dunfermline Abbey in 1818 were not those of King Robert the Bruce, but cf David 1., was expressed recently by Mr A. W. Clapham, C.8.E., F.8.A., secretary to the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments, England, and secretary of the Society of Antiquaries. Mr Clapham was giving a brief talk in the nave of the Abbey to a party of about 90 members of the Royal Archaelogical Institute of Great Britain and Ireland. Interviewed later by a representative of The Scotsman, Mr Clapham said: “ Circumstances indicate that the body of Robert the Bruce still remains undisturbed under the floor of Dunfermline Abbey rather further to the west under the modem church. “ The vault which was discovered was immediately before the high altar, whereas Robert the Bruce was buried in the middle of the choir of the monks, immediately to the east of the modern wall dividing the existing old church from the modern church.”
