REGENT THEATRE. AGAIN TO-NIGHT. “MAN HUNT.” “When I’m playing the part I’m always thinking about an old fellow back in Urbana, 111., that we used to call 'Windy' Miller,’’ remarked Chic Sale, while working in "Man Hunt,” the Warner Bros, picture now showing at the Regent Theatre. Sale’s role is that of a doddering old man who had once been sheriff of the community in which the picture is laid. That town is in the region of Kansas that was once tlie locale of stirring exploits of the Janies and Dalton boys, and old Ed Hoggins, the retired sheriff, is much given to telling highly coloured yarns of his personal- experiences witli those bandits. “To put it frankly,”' Sale remarked, “Ed Hoggins is a liar. But he’s not what you call a plain liar. He’s been telling his yarns for so many years that he just about believes them himself. "The old fellow who was known as 'Windy' Miller when I was a boy in Urbana, was the same type. Some of his yarns were obviously untrue. Once somebody made a survey of Windy’s pet yarns and found they covered a period of 480 years.” THURSDAY AND FRIDAY. “CAPTAIN HURRICANE." “Captain Hurricane,” RKO Radio’s colourful comedy drama of Cape Cod folk, is a story of a captain who loved
the sea, even though he tried to get away from it and live a sedate life on the land, where he never felt at home. James Barton, noted Broadway star, brings to the screen the role of the explosive Captain Zenas Henry Webster, trying so hard to settle down and cool.his temper so lie could be accepted by the woman to whom lie had been proposing for 20 years, but who would never have him because ol his roving disposition and his terrible temper. Captain Zenas never gets mad 'at anything but inanimate things. For instance, lie vents his fury on the doorsteps, which he tears up in a rage, on statues, waggons and maybe, perhaps, “summer folk and meddlers.” But I lie minute after be "blows off” he is sorry, as mild as a baby, and wears a look like “the cat that swallowed the canary.” Tills delightfully quaint character offers tlie famous star of the phenomenal stage hit, "Tobacco Road,” tlie greatest characterisation lie ever portrayed. Co-featured witli him as tlie prim spinster whom he woos while she mothers and dominates him is Helen Wesley. Also co-featured are Helen Mack as the waif of tlie sea and Gene Lockhart as one of tlie captain’s cronies. A youthful romance in which Miss Mack figures, provides a strong element in tlie story.
EMPIRE THEATRE. NEXT WEEK-END. “MY HEART IS CALLING.” The many admirers of Jan Kiepura are in for another vocal treat when tlie Gaumont-British picture, “My Heart is Calling” is released Shortly
by Fox Film. Its story gives the famous Polish tenor fullest vocal scope, while diverting comedy provides Sonnle Hale with (mother role after his own heart. A ricli vein of romance in the story offers many opportunities for the piquant acting of Marta Eggerth, a glamorous young Hungarian who has earned fame on tlie Continental screen and stage for her singing no less than her acting. "My Heart is Calling" is coming to' the Empire Theatre next week-end.
