REBATE APPRECIATED

GOOD PERCENTAGE OF PAYMENTS. That the ratepayers of Te Awamutu appreciated the offer by the Borough Council of a five per cent rebate on this years’ rates if paid by 31st July was evident by the figures presented to the Council on Monday evening. The clerk-treasurer stated that the total rates collectable were £10,4250 which £312 12s 5d had been saved by rebates, for ratepayers had actually paid £6470 15s 4d. Thus there was £3641 14s 3d still outstanding. A total of £2239 16s of general rate was collectable, and £1517 15s 5d was actually paid; thus the amount of general rate outstanding was £722 0s 7d. The amount of this year’s rate actually collected in July was £5956 19s 3d, as compared with £5691 13s 8d last July. Therefore £265 5s 7d more was collected during the month of July this year than in July a year ago. The Mayor commented that probably not much more of rate moneys would come in until just before the application of the ten per cent penalty. Cr North said there had been a very satisfactory response. The Mayor remarked that the early payment saved the Council from the necessity of arranging for an overdraft to carry on its maintenance and streets work, etc. The treasurer remarked that on one day in July £l2OO had been paid in, and on another day just over £lOOO was received.
