BADMINTON
LOCAL CLUB MEMBERS WATCH ENGLISH CHAMPION. About twenty members of Te Awamutu Badminton Club took advantage of the visit to Hamilton of Mr J. F. Devlin, the All-England champion, to attend an exhibition last evening, and all thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity. A programme of events was held in the Bledisloe Hall, Hamilton, where there was a large and interested assemblage of players and enthusiasts. The star item of the evening was the doubles games, in which J. F. Devlin ar.d G. W. Gower (Hamilton) were matched with H. H. Fow and !R. T. Tear (Hamilton). The first game was won by the former pair by 15—9, and the second game went to 13—13, and, continuing, Devlin and his partner secured the next three points and set. Details of other games played are as follow: G. Clough (Hamilton) and I. Johnston (Te Aroha) beat C. Mallet (Morrinsville) and A. Dempster (Hamilton), 21—17. J. F. Devlin (England) beat H. H. Fow (Hamilton), 15.—2 and 15—0. Misses A. Dempster and J. Clough (Hamilton) beat Mrs Fow and Miss M. Edmonson (Hamilton), 21 15. J. F. Devlin and Miss Edmonson beat H. H. Fow and Mrs Fow, 15 3 and 15—0. J. F. Devlin and R. Lewis (Te Aroha) beat A. Dempster (Hamilton) and J. Barnett (Morrinsville), 15—9 and 15—6. J. F. Devlin beat A. Dempster, l r > 7 Afterwards the champion, who had been heartily applauded and thanked ror his exhibitions, gave a short talk on the game itself and his own experiences in different parts of the world, ending with hearty thanks for the reception and hospitality accorded him in the Waikato.
