THE NEW COUNCIL

FIRST MEETING From their showing at the first meeting it is not improbable that some of the new members of the Borough Council will put a little ginger into the proceedings at Council meetings. They entered keenly into the discussion when the Mayor put forward the names of the Councillors he was proposing for the various committees. The first difference of opinion arose over the quarry committee. The Mayor, who had asked for sug gestions, had placed Cr. Hamilton on ■the Quarry Committee and Cr. Ken nedy on the Building and Sanitary Committee. Cr. Kennedy, who is also a member of the Piako County Council, is naturally deeply interested in quarries, and he suggested that it might be a better arrangement, prodded Cr. Hamilton was agreeable, if could change places. Cr. Hamilton said he was quite willing to have Cr. Kennedy’s name on the Quarry Committee in place of his own, but he was averse to going on the Building and Sanitary Committee. Cr. Kennedy made it clear that he did not wish to press his point and had merey complied with "the Mayor’s request making a suggestion which he tlfougbt a good one. No change was made in the committees as proposed by the Mayor. , When the Council was dealing with the representatives on the Fire Board there was much differenceof opinion, two of the new members urging strongly that they should not go outside the Council for representatives. The qualifications of one representative who is not a councillor were not questioned and only the principle was attacked. One , new member proposed that Cr. Sellar’s name should be substituted for Mr Arthur’s, but Cr. Sellar’s\ who had previously spoken very highly of Mr Arthur’s qualifications and good service to the Borough, promptly declined to accept nomination. At the conclusion of the meeting Cr. Kennedy thanked the Mayor for the welcome given to new councillors,' and intimated that while he would be ready to support all that his judgment approved he would not hesitate to speak his mind whenever there was occasion for adverse criticism.
