MAGISTRATE’S COURT
SITTING AT TE AROHA MR J. H. SALMON, S.M. The monthly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held at. Te Aroha but the list of cases set down for -hearing was small, and the sitting only lasted about an hour. NO LIGHTS Benjamin Hines did not appear to answer a charge of having ridden a bicycle after sunset in Kenrick street without a light. The offence was committed at about 11 p.m. A fine of 10/- with costs 10/- was imposed. Alfred Smith was charged with having a motor cycle in Kenrick street on May Ist after sunset without a light. Evidence was given that the offence occurred at 6 p.m., and that the man had a lamp which was out of repair. A fine of 10/- and costs was imposed. BREACH OF DEFENCE ACT A youth was charged with having failed to register under the Defence Act. The offence was admitted, but it was stated that it was entirely unintentional. The boy’s father was misled by reading a notice, and was under the impression that by putting in a notice to register on March 31st, he was complying with the law. The defendant was convicted and discharged. The Magistrate ordered the suppression of the name. LIQUOR SUPPLIED TO NATIVE WilLfini Stanley was charged with having supplied liquor, viz., a bottle of beer, to a native. There was a charge against Tupu Katete Tineaha of harving aided and abetted Stanley in a breach of the law. Stanley stated that he believed Tineaha was a white man and was entitled to have liquor. He had not heard the man’s name. Each was convicted and fined £1 and costs. PROHIBITION ORDER An application was made for a prohibition order against Ernest Horne who was stated to be a married man with six children and had done nothing to support his home since October. Constable Monson said he had seen Horne once or twice lately under the influence of liquor, but he was quiet and on his way home. The application was not opposed and an order was made.
