COUNCIL CHAMBERS
FOR PIAKO COUNTY AN ENGINEER’S HOUSE WAITOA OR TE AROHA Remarks made in the course of a digression, at the meeting of the Piako County Council on Monday, would appear to give colour to the idea that there is “something in the wind” in regard to the erection of county buildings by the Piako County Council. Cr. Kennedy introduced the matter, by saying that he considered that the county should soon invest in a residence for the engineer. He thought a suitable site should be secured immediately. The chairman, in a whimsical vein, remarked that the Council might soon want a piece of ground in a more central position, say at Waitoa—(laughter). Cr. Lowry suggested that the engineer should prepare plans for Council Chambers to cost not more than £2OOO. The Council paid £l3O a year for the present accommodation and quarters of their own would be much more satisfactory. The present accommodation was rather cramped and inconvenient. £2OOO at 6 per cent, would not be as much as they were now paying in rent. The engineer said that he could not prepare the plans just at present owing to the stress of work but he would do so as soon as possible. The chairman: I can see that you are going to start an argument, Te Aroha or Morrinsville. Carry on with the business. The matter then dropped.
