EXPEDITING MAILS
THE STAR MOTOR SERVICE DEPARTMENT NOT FAVOURABLE PROPOSAL TO GIVE SUBSIDY A letter was read at the Te Aroha Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday evening from Mr C. H. Boyd, Chief Postmaster, Thames, stating that the application in regard to the conveyance of letters from Frankton Junction to Te Aroha by the Star motor service was referred to the Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department.- He was instructed to inform the Chamber that their application for 1 the service was declined. ' Mr W. H. Simons, Postmaster, Te Aroha, wrote in regard to the Chamber’s views concerning the lateness in sorting the mails, stating that the fault did not rest with his office. Delays were caused by the late arrivals of the trains. He had favourably recommended the proposal to establish a mail service per the Auckland Star motor service to Te ,Ar,oha. The question of raising a fund as a subsidy towards getting the Star service to carry mails was raised by several members. It was stated that if the Chamber raised about £3O probably the Department could be prevailed upon to agree to the Star service carrying the mails from Frankton Junction to Te Aroha. It was decided to write to the Postmaster-General and ask him if in the event of the Chamber of Commerce agreeing to give a subsidy would the Department agree to a Star mail service being instituted.
It was stated that as soon as an answer was received from the Department the Chamber would be in a position to know what to do in the matter.
