GAMBLING SCHOOLS

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I am grateful to you for publishing my letter, also to the various correspondents for their views and the extra publicity which they have given the matter. How true are the. words —“Men love darkness rather than light because their deeds are evil.” It must be very annoying to the gambling school leaders to be thus brought into such prominence and before the public eye. Disease cannot thrive where there is fresh air and sunshine, and a little airing of public opinion on this subject is doing much good. The first symptom of health is a general “windiness” among the “fraternity” inasmuch that one professional gentleman has since made a somewhat belated New Year’s resolution and has decided to earn an honest crust by lawful business. Will the others follow suit? They will be well advised, to ie ’ follow suit as quickly as possible and for a long time to come. Let them remember that “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush,” and an honest “bob” is worth two dishonest ones at any time, and especially so now that daylight has streamed in and the police are anxious to vindicate their existence. I have to thank “Joy Bells,” “Our Jock,” and “Sympathy” for their letters, and should I decide to “join up” I can no doubt rely upon them for a reference. “Sympathy” seemed to be a little undecided as to whether I t needed a little scolding or not, but I take it that he will cheer up and take a firm stand for the best and healthiest sports within the law. As for “A Brother” and “Marcus,” I must thank them for their splendid letters which were well worth reading and show that they are not afraid of their colours or to stand by the authority of the law of our land. Let me add that the public are watching and are not afraid to force action from the highest authorities if necessary. Thanking, you, Mr Editor, for space.—l am, etc., CITIZEN.
