THE MOVIES
Lack of familiarity with American ways involves Ming Toy, as played by Constance Talmadge in “East is West,” the First National attraction to be shown on Monday at the Theatre Royal, in several tensely dramatic situations and also in as great a number of humorous moments. Ming Toy is taken to America by the kindly Lo Sang Kee after her sensational escape from the “Love Boat” in China, where she was about to be sold*at auction. In America Ming Toy first lives in San Francisco’s Chinatown and the only whites whom she can observe closely are the habitues of Kelly’s dance hall across the street. The mannerisms which Ming Toy acquire make Jimmy Potter, a settlement worker, think that she is tremendously sophisticated. But Billy Benson, who has loved her since first he saw her in China, knows better — and proves it in the eight exciting reels of this remarkable photoplay. The supporting cast includes Nigel Barry and Warner Oland.
