The Te Aroha News Published MONDAYS, WEDNESDAYS AND FRIDAYS WEDNESDAY, FEB. 27, 1918 NOTES AND COMMENTS THE WESTERN FRONT
Linux continues to be thrown ou the West front, showing much of the interestimg liveliness peculiar to periods of preparation in war. The British have carried out a hig raid in front of the Polygon Wood near Gheluvelt; the enemy has attacked at Arleux, close to Cambrai, iu the head of our salient, aud broken his head against the wall; the artillery has been growling at various points, and the air has again been fnll of romarkablo work. The American War Secretary says in his weekly report that the enemy expects much from shock troops that he has brought up, adding (information from the American front no doubt) that the bulk of those troops are absolutely ignorant of Western trench warfare. If this means that the new troops are being taught to advance in open order, discarding the massed formation which has cost the Germau armies such terrible losses, it adds to the formidableness of the prospect. But does it mean that ? Wo seem to have heard
that the enemy has tried hard to e> tablish the open Bystem of advance common to the British and French armies, and always discovered that it does not suit the temper of his men.
