TWO YACHTS LOST. THREE MEN DROWNED AND OTHERS MISSING. STORMY WEATHER AT LYTTELTON. Christchurch, December 14.
The yaoht Coquette, which left Lyttelton for Akaroa, was wrecked at Pah Bay, near Lebon's Bay, this afternoon, and her crew of three drowned. Mr Collins, a resident in the locality, saw her put back and anchor near the entrance to the bay. Soon after seas began to break over her. At two o'clock she hoisted a flag halfmast, and at three began to break up. It was impossible to render assistance. The s.e. Mawhera, which arrived at Lyttelton to-night, reports that she had to put into Lebon's Bay for shelter, and ascertained that the Coquette had been wrecked, and three young men — Nalder, Batten and Hewitt — sonB of Lyttelton residents, drowned. The place where Collins saw the yacht anchor was very unsuitable, but it is supposed they were unacquainted with the coast. Collins saw another yacht, which he supposed had escaped, but the Mawhera reports that the yacht Dewdrop, afro bound for Akaroa, was seen drifting seaward, without anyone on board. She left Lyttelton in charge of two men — one named Barron, and another, whose name is supposed to be Holland. It is not certain whether they are drowned or not.
