DROP FROM THE CLOUDS. Sydney, December 3.
Following in the footsteps of Professor Baldwin, a local watchmaker named Williams has invented a parachute by which a descent may be made from a balloon at any altitude. Today, at Ash field, a municipal borough of Sydney, five miles from town, Wiliiams, in the presence of a large concouise ot people, ascended in a balloon lo six thousand feet, when he pulled a slip-knot which connected the parachute with the balloon, and commenced a descent. .For a time his descent was like a stone, but when near the earth the bundle expanded, and piesented the shape of a Japanese umbrella. Slowly the parachute descended,, and Williams gracefully de scended at Home Bush, three miles fro.n where the ascent was made, not having received the slightest injury. The inventor claims that the balloon is navigable in any direction, and that the descent can be made without risk.
