Sandes, at Maunga\yharn station, they proceeded together next morning to the scene of the obstruction an<U he Engineer set the ,men, to work} when- in about an* hour some twenty-five natives, headed^ by, an, old native nnmed Te Haehae, came upon the scene of action, and a long discussion 'on«uftd between fclio natives ami the Engineer wiUi regard to Ihe carrying out of this work. The gi*t of the armnnents by tho natives in justification of. their conduct was to tho effect that they were simply carrying out the instructions of King Tawhiao, who was opposed to any roads, being const ructe I which would enable the pakeha to pass through native 1 md, and had desired them to warn , all contractors off the ground. After retraining a couple of hours, however, th \ nxtives returned home peaceably, having been warned bySergeant Emerson of the folly of showing resistance, and it is believed no further opposition will be made by them. Serjeant Emerson returned home on Sunday evening.
