Flood Fences.

Wiiere it is necessary to run a fence across a gully or stream liable to great rushes of water in it after heavy rains a device such as is hero illustrated will bo found very desirable. This is a panel of a fence so constructed as to swing upon its lower stringer aft a pivot, and lie prostrate during the flood, only requiring feD be raised up after it is over. The cut shows a single panel, the fence being composed of a series of similar panels acting independently of each other. The lower stringer has rounded ends, fitted into round holes in two short posts, which are driven firmly into the ground.

The Ixiiral New Yorker, from which we have ro-engraved our illustration, thus describes the method of put ting up such a fence :— Each panel is built of upright pieces nailed securely to this journalled lower rail, and to a transverse board at the top, and has the upright pieces on the upstream side. At. each side there is a pivoted brace. The- braces are planted in the earth in the- direction from which the water flows, and tho fence rests upon them, leaning slightly in that direction. The action of a strong current of water naturally pulls out the braces, and the fence, rovolving on its pivoted lower rail, turns in tho other direction and floats at anchor It is further protected by an embankment of earth or stono into which tho braces are fixed, and which slants up co as to carry the force of the current above the fence when it lies prostrate
