UNKNOWN An Attempt to Goad the Irish Into Acts of Violence.
Mis HhsuY Laijouchkrk's special to the "World" of March 23rd says :-" There can be little doubt that the Government is anxious to goad the Irish into over resistance in order to influence public opinion in Kng-land and thus carry their Coercion Bill. A telegram of Balfour to Captain Plunkett was the direct incentive to the murdei of a man at Youghal. In that town a crowd composed mainl) of boyj an«l women had paraded the streets to protest against thearrestofavenerableanchenerated priest because he declined to become a witness in the Bankruptcy Couit where it wa.s hoped that he would Lo-my secrets confided to him in the conte-sionul. In defiance of the protests of the local magistrate the police we.c ordered to charge the ciowd with lixed bayonots. Tlie eiowd at once tied, but they were paired by the police and a man in his flight was ;oi f ted by bayonets and died of his wound*. Let anyone consider what indignation all this would have aroused had it taken •place in England and he will realise the bitter hatred which such atiocities evoke in Ireland. There is nothing more dangerous than n body of week men instrusted with power and urged to act of firmness by their adherents. The Tory Government eon.si>ts of old women who are ready to plunge blindly into excesh to prove that they are men.''
