COUNTY COUNCIL. A special meeting of the County Council was held on Saturday afternoon last, Crs Cock, (Chairman), JNicholls, Butler, and Humphrejs, present. A request for rppahs to the road from Tui to the main road was read from the Te Aroha Improvement Oommittee. It was stated that Mr C. A. Comes wished for means of transit for 100 tons ore to be sent to Auckland en route for Swansea, Wales. After considerable discussion a preliminary sum of £5 was • voted — A letter was received from Mr Kenrick, R.M., re the erection of a. Warden's and it.M. Court at Paeroa, stating he thought that the bosiness of the place would as yet scarcely warrant such a course. —On the motion of Cr3 Nicholls and Humphreys, the Clerk was instructed to write to the Government requesting a subsidy of £400 to assist

ii the erection of oliices suitable for Court work, also to be available for (lie 15. 31. and "NYui don's Courts.— A letter was received from the Treasury in reference "to the appropriation of the gold duty acciu'ng from Ohinemuri quartz, smelted at the La Momte . furnace, Thames, by the Thames County Council. The Act was quoted justifying 1 that course. The Chairman stated that it was not improbable that the whole revenue accruing from gold duty would be stopped. He moved that the Clerk be instructed to write to Mr Grace. M.11.1L, requesting him to work with the other goldfield members in endeavoring if possible t > stop the duty being taken off. Cr Butler said no miner would object to the gold duty. If they got the gold they would willingly pay the duty. The motion was canicd. The balance-sheet to March 31st, 188(3, was duly passed.

WAIIII. Silverfon. — The late return of 1920zs j melted gold, value £2 18s per oz, beingthe result oF treating 1 40 tons of general dirt and 5001bs of picked stone, speaks i volumes for the bullion producing qualities of this mine, nnd augurs well for the future for those who are interested in it. Fully 75 per cent of the tailings, being- the residue of the above mentioned parcel, has been saved in a series of six pits located at intervals of -i feet, and connected with each other by means of wooden shoots. Average samples of these tailings assayed by J. A. Pond, Colonial Analyist, revealed the fact that not more tlmn forty per cent of the metal contained in tne ore has been saved by the battery process. This means ihat at loast half the bullion value of the ore instill in the tailings, and the next question which piesents itself for solution is, how is that portion of the metal to be turned to account? It is useless to attempt fronting tho tailings in berdan^, because those apI plianees have been tried ond found wanting, and at the piesent time, there ! is no other method of tieatnient at the disposal of the mana^emeat. 1 believe. 1 however, that Mr .J. A. Ton*, who is one ot the shareholder^, i? now endued in the uoik of pei feeling a pioce^s for tne exti.ici.ion of metal fiom all classes of ore. and that this will very Iv J brought to boar upon the tailings i<i | question. Union. — There is no change to note in this mine, where stoping operations are still in progress with highly sitisf.ietoiy lesnlts. There is every probabl it v that Mr J. VT. Walkor, who is one of the principal shareholder*, will veiy 1 v picceed to England, visiting Sw.ui^ci,! The ore in this mine, like most; other tpines in this district-, is not amenable to t.'ic battery system of treatment, and the sharohol-leia are now fully alive to the fact that it bnfc a Tra«.te of time and money to attempt dealing with it by that process. New Quartz Reduction Woiks. — The excavations for the building have been , completed and the framework h now in the couise of erection. Good headway is being made with the work of constructing the darn and the excavations for the water race aie also fairly advanced. Ivanhoe. — This Company's battery is now undergoing- a complete overhaul. i The old turbine has been taken out and a new pelton wheel, manufactured by Price Bros., Thames, has boeu substituted. The renovations will be complete early next week, when the battery will again be in a position to resume crushing operations and the first parcel '• to be dealt with, will consist of 40 tons from the Adeline mine. ,
