CENSUS OF THE COLONY.
Closers returns by electorates show that the total population is about SOO less than osti-matc-a, owing to the difficulty of ascertaining tho departures by ship. The first column give-^ the present population, and the second the number of electors :—: —
Tho total for the South Island is 326,076 people, and 77,320 electors. Population of the Colony. The total population of the colony in 1886 i8 573,480, as against 482,019 in 1881. The number of Chinese in the North Island is 283 ; South Mand, 4,083 : total, 4,366.
Adjustment of Representation. It is considered that a re-diatribution, on the old scale, would give the North Island 39 o*" 40 mombers instead of 3P, and the South Island 52 instead of 56 ; this is exclusive of Maori members. On the other hand, if it is decided not to reduce the South Island votes, the North Island should have increased votes.
