Population of the Colony. The total population of the colony in 1886 i8 573,480, as against 482,019 in 1881. The number of Chinese in the North Island is 283 ; South Mand, 4,083 : total, 4,366.

Adjustment of Representation. It is considered that a re-diatribution, on the old scale, would give the North Island 39 o*" 40 mombers instead of 3P, and the South Island 52 instead of 56 ; this is exclusive of Maori members. On the other hand, if it is decided not to reduce the South Island votes, the North Island should have increased votes.
