THE PETREL INQUIRY. | Auckland, Last night. The Cantain aad M>ate of the Petrel, were f ornially charged at tlie Police Court, to-day, and remanded. 400 people at the Court hooted them, as they were taken to their cells. ! j
LATEST FROM ROTORtTA. The White Terrace has been blown out, and instead there is now a huge perpendicular cliff, at least 150 feet high. About the site of the pink terrace there is a very large furmarole from which vast columns of steam issue. A vast chasm inside Tarawera is steaming. Tarawera and Rotomahana were firing up again this morning huge columns of steam intermingled with smoke rising over the hills. Last night a ball of fire of a deep red colour, was seen above Tawawera. It fell straight down. About half an hour afterwards a sharp shock of earthquake was felt at Rotorua. Johnston, Government Agent, has distributed a number <jof blankets to the natives, of whom some 400 are now gathered in the village. The Southern Cross, on her voyage to Auckland, encountered the effeots of the Tarawera eiuption, when the vessel was off the East Cape on the morning of the 10th inst. she experienced a downpour of sand, which continued until noon. News has been received that the natives at Owahakorato, alarmed at the increased activity of the hot springs there, and hearing of the fate of the Tarawera natives, are clearing out of the district with their belongings.
Wellington, Last Night. Fish, Auction, and Small Birds Nuisance Bills have parsed through Committee without amendment. Mr Hobbs intends to ask Government, whether they will favourably entertain pioposals to construct the remaining portions of the main trunk line, north oi Auckland, by a Company on terms similar to those pioposed to be conceded to the East ami West Coa&t Company. No fresh disturbances to-day anywhere saw Tongaiiio covered deeply with snow' and quiet. LATEST FROM PAEROA. Paeroa, last night A meeting of orebardists convened by Me&srs F, Cock and R. A. Wight, takes placG to-morrow (Saturday) evening when it is expected that a branch of the Thames Fiuit Giowers Association will be formed with the object of extirpating the Codlin Moth pest. Mr Cock is taking g'-c.tt inteiest in the matter both as a huge fruit grower, and in hi 3 capacity us county chairman. Arrangements arc being made to light up the Woodstock furnace by the begining of July.
