McCAUSLAND'S MILL DAMAGED.

Kotorua, June 11. The people at McCausland's mill, Taheke, Lake Kotiti, were in a great state of excitement. The mill iB reported to be completely damaged. Mr Parkf jun., who has arrived at Rotorua, states that people from the mill escaped in boats. All were saved.

BAD NEWS FROM OPOTIKI. From the statements of a gentleman who has juet arrived from Opotiki, it would appear that that district has suffered more severely, perhaps, than any of the coast settlements. On the morning of the eruption 73 distinct vibrations were felt, and Eor eighteen hours the clouds of volcanic iust caused total darkness. There was a Eall of sand for eighteen hours, and birds fell dead in all directions. The cattle are mad with hunger and thirst. A sample of bhe volcanic sand which fell at Opotiki may be seen at the Stab, Office. Telegram from His Worship the Mayor,

The following telegram has been sent to he Mayor of Tauranga by His Worship the Mayor :—: — " The Council desire me, on behalf of the citizens of Auckland, to convey to the settlers of the Thermal Springs district their expression of deep sympathy in the dreadful calamity which has overtaken them, and to assure them that they may rely on Auckland's aid in cases of distress arising therefiom. W. H. Waddell, Mayor.
