Great Loss of Life at Wairoa. The Schoolmaster and Family Killed.
The Haszard family, the schoolmaster at Wairoa and Eotomahana, is reported to have been blown up and perished. The schoolmaster's house is buried to the eaves in blue mud. Relief parties are -being organised here to go to the assistance of the Rotorua people, who are in a complete state of panic. Telegraphic communication is interrupted between Opotiki and Whakatane. From 12 to 20 persons are reported to have been killed at Wairoa. I Mr Hazard who is related to the Morpetlis of Ponsonby has been teacher oi the Wairoa Native School for a number of years. He is a very estimable man and highly respected in the district.
TAURANGA, 11.30. Another very sharp shock of earthquake has just occurred here, adding to the general consternation. The clouds of smoke and ashes have cleared off somewhat, but it is a period oj terrible suspense and anxiety for us: The Mayor is despatching all the available coaches and other vehicles along the Rotorua Road to the assistance oi the escapes from the Lake townships.
