CARNIVAL NOTES.

(BY THE 0.5.) The concert and dance held at Rangawaea on Friday last was a big success. Despite the unfavourable weather conditions a good crowd rolled up, and they entered into the proceedings with a vim and. enthusiasm that was truly astonishing. During the evening

a number of articles were auctioned and in each and every instance record

prices were obtained. The total proceeds from the function exceeded £BO. A duck presented by Mr. Forde, of Ruanui, fetched £2l 9/(5, while a cigar realised £2 19/. At the invitation of the chairman (Mr. J. Garmonsway), the Organising Secretary addressed the gathering and explained the conditions governing the competition. He also said it was their bounden duty to support their candidate even to the extent of making a kittle sacrifice. He stressed the fact that the. farmers generally were reaping the benefit of the war owing to the increased prices obtaining for their produce. He pointed out that those who could not fight should do the next, best thing: put their hands in their pockets and give freely and

generously to the boys who were fight

mg for them. The men on the Ruanui station were giving 10 per cent, of

their wages*to- help the gallant boys at the front—what was wrong with the farmers giving 10 per cent, of their profits'! At the suggestion of the speaker, a meeting was afterwards held and a strong committee appointed, with Mr. .1. Garnionsway as chairman. Mr. P. Pedersen treasurer, and Mr. H. -Tones secretary. The ladies elected Mrs. Freew for their chairwoman, Mrs. J Garnionsway secretary, and Mrs. Pedersen treasurer. It was decided to hold the next concert and dance on Friday, October 15th. • A gift auction sale will take place at Mrs. Dash wood’s to-morrow (Tuesday) aftornon in support of Mrs. R. W. Smith.

The friends of “Our Boys’ ” Candidate have intimated their intention' of running “afternon tea” every sale day, commencing on Wednesday next, to assist the prospects of their candidate.

The General Committee will meet in the Sapper Room of the Town Haiti tomorrow (Tuesday) evening. On Wednesday next a social and dance will eventuate in the Town Hall in honour of the Red Cross candidate, Miss Carpenter.

On the following evening a grand euchre party will be held in the Supper Room of the same building to further the interests of Mrs. E. IV. Smith.

The first count for the Queen Carnival Competition will be screened at Pae King s Theatre on Thursday evening next. A reminder is given of the monster concert, to be held in the Town Hall this evening. The entertainment promises to be one of the biggest, brightest, and best ever held in the district and should attract a crowded house.
