NEWS IN BRIEF.
Twenty-five members of the Sydenham Girl Scouts, under Scoutmistreas Odering, went to Port Levy to-day. They will be in camp there for 10 days. The Canterbury Shoepowners' Union, at its last executive meeting, passed resolutions urging the Government to endeavour to remove the price control in Great Britain on New Zealand free meat, and to endeavour to obtain a reduction in freight charges on produce. A letter has just come to hand from ihe Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. W. F. Slassey), stating that cables have been dispatched to the Imperial authorities in connection with these matters, and that immediately upon a reply being received a definite announcement will be forwarded. In connection with the Lytielton ptomaine poisoning case, we have been asked to correct the statement that the poisoning occurred through the victims eating pickled port. The trouble has been traced to a piece of tainted bacon, and in fairness to one of the local pork butchers, who did not supply the bacon, and whose business has been affected by the publication of the original report, we take this opportunity of putting the matter right. During warm weather, such as we have been experiencing lately, householders should bear in mind that meat becomes tainted very quickly. It may be perfectly good when purchased, but should be consumed at once. There is a great danger of it undergoing a change for the worse, particularly if it is exposed to dust and flies.
