ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
MONTHLY MEETING. The North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society met Inst evening, Mr M. 11. dodby presiding. "The dcncral Manager of Hallways. Mr 11. \V. McVillv, wrote granting permission for the display on railway stations of a poster offering a reward for Information leading to the detection of any person killing herons or Canadian geese. The. permit would 1)0 for three months free of charge, but space could not he given for a permanent advertisement. Mr Frank Moorhouse reported having placed posts at the wash-out at the head of the Selwyn River, thus successfully blocking the wash-out. There had been a Hood since the posts had been placed there, and only four of them had been dislodged.—A vote of thanks was passed to Mr MooThousr for his work in connection with the matter. The Waitaki Acclimatisation Society wrote in regard lo seetUu i.i cf th: Animals Protection Act, 1908. Under the Act the owner of lands and his family could shoot any number of deer on such land during the season without a license. It was considered that this matter should be dealt with without d.lay—lt was decided to support th:- W-ntaki Sniety ill its effort to have something done in the matter. The r.liristchurch War Memorial Committee wrote soliciting support for its fund. —lt was pointed out that the society had no power to expend its funds in this manner. It was decided to reply ill these terms to the committee. The curator, Mr I). Hope, reported that during Hie n th the rainbow trout had been taken from the ponds, and 120,0(1(1 eggs had been obtained. There had been 7(il three-vear-old fish liberated in the Avon. All the brown trout ova in the new hatchery had now hatched, and half of them were now al Ihe feeding stage. To fltllll an order the trap had heen placed in- the Selwyn River, bill owing to tin- scarcity of males onlv !Hi,K(lll eggs had been procured.
