A HIGH STATUS.
SOUTH AFRICA'S POSITION. THE N#W GOVERNOR-GENERAL. By Cablt. — Press Association. — Copiinght. Australian and A'.Z. Cable Association. (Rec. Aug. 17, 12.5) CAPE TOWN. Aug. 16. In the Senate Senator Mnrais objected to the appointment of Prince Arthur of Connaught as GovernorGeneral. The Governor-General, he said, should be a man in sympathy with the strong feeling of the majority of the people towards independence. General Smuts replied that the appointment was made on the direct recommendation of the Union Ministers. The King had acted on their direct advice. It was a complete proof of the high status the Union had attained. It was in the interests of the country to have as Governor-General a man whose social standing isolated him from party politics.
