Madame Gower Bums returned to Christchurch yesterday, after" a week in the country.
Miss "Gladys R. Kenipthorne (Christ church') left by the Wahine on Saturday to join the Ruahine, en route for Eng land.
Miss Xaneyc LeCren (Christchurch), who was staying with Mrs K. A. LeCren. Timam, is now the guest of friends in Dunediu.
The patients-- of the Military-Sana torium were again entertained by Mrs Temple's party on Saturday evening, when a first-class programme was given. The party consisted of Mrs Temple, Mrs Ford, Misses Grammer, Whitla and Boot, and Messrs Temple, Adams, Roberts. Ludbrook and Stokes. Mr R. A. Home's concert party from Christchurch. with the assistance of the children of St. Joseph's School, Lyttelton, gave a concert in the Oddfellows' Malt, Lyttelton, last night, in aid of the Catholic School Building Fund. There was a large attendance and a wellarranged programme of vocal and instrumental items was highly appreciated. The proceeds amounted to a substantial sum.
Miss Rose Tabart presided over a meeting of the Violet Pay Committee, held yesterday, when excellent progress was reported by tire various workers. The current Violet Hay will be the seventh held in Christchurch, and a great success is hoped for, towards which the public are asked to contribute to the fullest extent. The date has been fixed for September 1, and proceeds will be deVoted to the War Memorial Fund. The first of a series of Saturday-night dances, arranged by the Victory Assembly, was held at the" Caledonian Hall on Saturday evening, ami passed off very successfully, about 70 couples dancing to excellent music supplied by Mr Reg. Woods's orchestra. The ballroom bore a very bright appearance, being tastefully decorated in various harmonious shades, carried out in long muslin and paper streamers, which swung in festoons. Mr H. Sutherland acted as M.C.. and Mr R. H. Stillwell was the organisei of the affair.
A beautiful fairy play, in which some •200 performers will lake part —all representative of local talent —will be proiiucjed in the Theatre Royal on August 25, 26 and 27, in aid of th" fund for furnishing the Anglican Girls' Hostel. The play, which is called "The Wishing Well," was written, by Miss Burton (daughter of the Rev. Canon Burton, late of *St. Michael's), and will be produced by Mrs Helen Mortimer, of this city, who was also a Miss Burton. It occupies three acts, with beautiful ballets and'spectacular staging, and the public of Christchurch will doubtless greatly enjoy, the experience of being taken into fairyland in mediaeval times. Crowded houses are anticipated on all three evenings.
