IN INTERESTS OF ECONOMY. CONSUMER TO BEAR BURDEN. By Cable. — Frets Association. — Copyright. Reuter's Telegrams. (Rec. Aug. 13, 9.0) LONDON, Aug. 12; The Rt. Hon. Austen Chamberlain (Chancellor of the Exchequer) has announced that the Government has decided, in the interests of national economy, and with a view to hastening the return of normal trade conditions, to end the bread subsidy before the beginning of another financial year. At present the subsidy is about 5d on a quartern loaf. Threepence of that will be transferred from the taxpayer to the consumer next month, and whatever balance remains, according to the price of wheat, will be transferred by the close of the financial year.
