Mr B. E. MeDougall has returned to Christchurch alter a visit to Australia.
The Hon. G. J. Smith, M.L.C., arrived from the north by this morning's boat. The Mayor, Dr 11. T. -T. Thacker, M.P., and Mrs Thacker returned from Wellington this morning.
The Bishop of Duuedin (the Right Bev. Dr J. Rkhnrds) intends leaving for England in January, on a flyingvisit in connection with Church matters.
Mr and Mrs 11. Fuller, of Selwyn Street, Christchurch, who have been visiting England and Scotland, are at present in France. They will leave Fugland for New Zealand on August 24.
Mr T. 11. Smith, of Hallenstein Bros., Christchurch, has been transferred to the firm's Greymouth branch, to take charge of the- mercery and clothing departments. Mr E.».T. Righton. managing director of the New Zealand Picture Supplies, went south by the second express to-day. Ile'is accompanied by Mrs Righton, and will return to Christchurch for a few days next week.
Mr E. 11. Wyles, president of the Canterbury Employers' Association, has returned to Christchurch from Wellington, where he was a member of a deputation to the Prime Minister, in regard to' amendments to the Board of Trade Act.
Mr Vivian Wilson (son of Mr .T. IT. Wilson, of Garden Road) an old boy of trie Boys' High School, and graduate of Canterbury College, has taken a first (-lass in the first part of Classical Tripos, Cambridge TJuivev-sity. He entered at Trinity in October last. The late Mr William Forbes, who died in Linwood recently, was an old colonist, having come to Lytteltou in ISG2 in the ship Mary Ann. He was a native of Scotland, of a sturdy stock and endured many of the hardships and vicissitudes, of the early days. For the past 20 years he lived a retired life, and was 84 years of age at time of demise. His wife predeceased him by nine years, and he leaves a grown-up family of two sons and five daughters, also 28 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Sympathetic references to the death of Mr W. E. Bullen, late chairman of the Beckenham School Committee, were made at the last meeting of that body, and the following motion was carried:— "That we place on record our very highest admiration for the many services rendered to our school and district by our late chairman, and that we convey to his sorrowing wife and family our deep sympathy for the great loss they have sustained." The meeting then adjourned out of resrjeet to Mr Bullen 's memory.
Mr W. G. Sutton, manager of the Crystal Palace, has resigned that position in order to re-enter the managerial side of the theatrical business with his •old partner, Mr Edwin Adder, in South Africa. Some years ago Messrs Adder and Sutton's pierrot and comedy companies were well known in England. Several members of Sir Harry Lauder's company,.which recently toured South Africa, decided to remain there. Mr Adeler has now taken them over, and in forming from them a strong costume comedy company, has invited Mr Sutton to rejoin him. Mr Sutton will leave for South Africa on September 8, and expects to visit New Zealand with the company after finishing in South Africa.
