■ . ■» EARLY SETTLEMENT EXPECTED. Press Association. GREYMOUTH, August 11. In reference to the strike at the State coal-mines over train fares, a meeting of the union was held yesterday to receive the report of the conference between its executive and the Mines Department. A telegram was read from the general manager of the State mines agreeing to the same rates as the suburban workmen's train, the department to pay the difference between the suburban fares and the present rates for State miners, also agreeing to abolish the night shift and employ the men on day shift. The'meeting resolved to accept these terms, but work will not be resumed Intil a guarantee is given that the timetable will be that agreed upon at the conference between the executive and the department. It is confidently anticipated that an early settlement will be reached.
