DEAD CHILD FOUND.

■ I're*t A'noniation. DUNEDIN, January 22. An inquest was opened to-day on tho body of a newly-born infant which was found in a sack on St. Clair beach on Tuesday with a piece of linen tied tightly round the neck. Dr Evans said that the body was fully developed and well nourished. There was a circular pressure mark on the neck. He was of opinion that the child had lived, and that the cause of death was asphyxia. There was no water on the lungs, showing that it had not been drowned. The cause of death must have been some interference with the air supply. A constable said the bag hid apparently been in the sea, but it could not have been there long. It \\as found at high-water mark. The coroner adjourned tho inquiry sine die.
