COLONEL CHAFFEY.
HONOURED BY MOTORISTS.
The ujembers of the executive of the Canterbury Automobile Association met last evening to make a presentation to Colonel R. A. Chaffey, C.B.E, V.D., A.D.C., who relinquished the position of Officer Commanding the Canterbury Military District last week. Mr J. S. Hawkes, president of the association, referred to the great help which Colonel Chaffey and his staff had always given the association by readily supplying information and advice. At i times there had been difficulties encountered and annoyances met, but the blame for these could never be attributed to Colonel Chaffey. Mr A. S. Clarkson, who had been in charge of the association's transport work, said that" Colonel Chaffey was honoured as a sportsman <and a gentleman. In his capacity an Officer Commanding the Canterbury Military District he had done all he possibly could to assist the association.
Tributes were also paid to Colonel Chaffey's courtesy and organising powers •by Messrs P. W. Johnston, C. W. Hervey, D. Friedlander, N. M. Orbell and H. Lightbahd. Mr Hawkes then presented Colonel Chaffey with a case of pipes, with an engraved silver mounting. Colonel Chaffey, replying, stated that in doing what he could for his country he had not looked for any tangible recognitions of service. Nevertheless, he would highly cherish the gift from his friends in the Automobile whose services he greatly appreciated. He had been much disappointed, when the War broke out, that he was unable to go on active service. He had offered his services in any capacity, from cook upwards, but had been told to stay where he was. He had never hesitated to ask the Automobile Association for help, and the members had always done their best to help him. They had all "done their bit" towards winning the War.
The health of Colonel Chaffey was drunk with musical honours.
