AUSTRALIAN RACING. V.R.C. MEETING. ARTILLERYMAN WINS MELBOURNE CUP. By Cable — Press Association. — Copyright. MELBOURNE, November 4. The weather was flue and bright for the second day of the Victoria Racing Club's spring meeting, and there was a record attendance. The course provided good going. Sartrlllo led nearly all the way in the Cup Hurdle Race, the time, 3min 42jsec, equalling ihe course record. Colonel Chutney was favourite for the Railway Highweight Handicap, and won nicely. He cost £OOO last season, and this is his first win since then. Pontoon was not in "the first 10 to finish. Capella led nearly all the way in the November Nursery, and won in good style from Delight, who looked to have a chance at the distance post. Artilleryman scored a runaway victory in the Melbourne Cup. He led for the last two and a-half furlongs, and won with a lot in hand. He broke the Cup record by Msec. Richmond Main was well up all the way, and Snub was running on at the finish. British Arch died out in the last half-mile. R. .Lewis rode his third Cup winner in Artilleryman. It was a very clean race. Tararu Jack was fourth in the Steeplechase. The winner, Vanitor, led all the way, and won easily. Dick Meagher had charge half a mile from home, but Artileryman led round the home turn and won very easily by six lengths, while Richmond Main beat the fast-finishing Two Blues by half a. length. PRESS COMMENT. (Rcc. Nov. 5, 11.10) SYDNEY, Nov. 5. The "Herald" describes the (".up as a wellconditioned Held and a splendid start. It says that coming down the straight Millienie took charge, and, with British Arch, Telecles and Dick Meagher, rattled past the judge's box. At the turn, Telecles was in command. Here Artilleryman worked his way through the field in a lew strides and had Telecles in dllllcullies, and, with a brilliant run on the rails, Artilleryman swung into the home stretch with Richmond Main, Chrome, Lucknow, and Two Blues in hopeless pursuit. The "Telegraph" says that no easier victory has been scored for years. Passing the sheds, Lewis got a remarkable opening and took Artilleryman to the front, and, after a brilliant and sensational run, won easily. ELLEKSLIE TRAINING NOTES. Presx Axsnciation.
