LOCAL AND GENERAL.

At the laying of the foundation stone of the Returned Soldiers' Club .byAdmiral Lord Jellicoe this morning, the Mayor (Dr H. T. J. Thacker) reported; that he had had a cheque for £SOO given him by the Diggers' Pierrots to dispose of as he thought fit. He intended to lay £4OO of that sum on the foundation stone, and Mrs Thacker and himself would add another £IOO. Street collections were made all this morning on behalf of the Returned Soldiers' Club building fund. Many ladies and some 40 sailors were engaged in selling neat little cards bearing the badge of the Returned Soldiers' Association. The headquarters of the appeal are situated in the Chamber of I Commerce. It is anticipated that a large sum will be obtained as a result. Prizes are being offered by the committee for the best boxes brought in. The concert party of H.M.S. New Zealand is giving a programme of varied items in the Choral Hall on September 9. The tars will'be heard in music, song and story, while some original work by the String Band and Haka Party will be contributed. Again, there will be conjuring, hornpipes, and musical monologues and other items. The proceeds are in aid of the British and Foreign Sailors' Society Funds. The plan is at The Bristol.
