FIRES.
DWELLING-HOUSE DAMAGED. The kitchen of the house -owned and occupied by Mr W. H. Stephens at 205 Sloorhouse Avenue was destroyed by a ire wliieh broke out at 7.10 p.m. yesterlay, and the remainder of the house and furniture was damaged by smoke and ieat. There was no one at home when ;ho outbreak originated. The furniture md house were insured for £2OO and £4lO respectively in the Victoria office. OUTBREAKS - AT KAIAPOI. A two-storied house in Peraki Street, Kaiapoi, owned and occupied by Mr J. Doran, was totally destroyed by fire at eight o’clock last evening, aud a fourroomed cottage adjoining, owned and occupied by Mr J. Coffey, was also de--troyed. Practically ail of Mr Coffey’s furniture was got out safely, but nothing except a piano was saved from Mr Doran’s house. A house adjoining,occupied by Mr S. Harper, was only slightly damaged, the efforts of the brigade being centred on saving the adjoining houses. The origin of the fire is not known. Mr Coffey’s house was insured for £IOO and the furniture for £6O with the Northern Insurance Company, and Mr Doran’s furniture for £SO in the State Office. Owiug to some defect it was 25 minutes before the water was got going. Mr John Gilmore, a returned soldier, was one of the first on the scene aud after working till the fire was well under control fell from the roof of the verandah ami sprained his ankle.
