a r * A BABY'S DEATH. A three-months'old child. Myrtle Lily Bathgen, the daughter of Mr and Mrs P. T. Bathgen, of Tai Tapu, was

fatally injured in Cashel Street, on Saturday, as the result of a fall from a trap. The party, which comprised the father, mother and two children, was driving along the street, which waa somewhat slippery, and opposite the Zetland Hotel the horse stumbled aad fell, the occupants of the trap being thrown out. The baby fell near to the horse, which rolled over the chili in its efforts to rise. The baby was conveyed to the hospital by Sergeant Major Doubleday, and it died toon after admission. At the inquest, conducted by Mr 8. E. McCarthy, 8.M., yesterday, Dr L. A. Bennett said there was a bad fracture of the base of the skull, and, although the ehild was breathing when admitted, it died within half an hour. Frederick Thomas Rathgen, the father, deposed that when the horse klipped on the asphalt and the party waft thrown out, his wife fell on her head aad the child rolled from her anna. Tha Coroner returned a verdict that the ehiM died from injuries received through being thrown out of a gig and that there was no evidence to suggest negligent driving.
