TOTALISATOR PERMITS.
POSITION OF TROTTING. The question of the granting of an increased number of totalisator permits for trotting meetings was referred to by the Hon. G. W. Russell (Minister of internal Affairs) in conversation with a Sf.v representative. For instance, said Mr Russell, the Wellington Trotting Club had a permit for only one day in the year, and there were many important districts in the North Maiid where trotting was entirely unrepresented, lie hardly thought that trotting enthusiasts would be content with such a state of affairs. The difficulty was to see a way out of the position. It would be of little use suggesting that those clubs which held racing permits should make a sacrifice so that an equal number of permits might be issued for trotting as had been issued for galloping. On the other hand lie greatly doubted if it would be wise to go to Parliament for an increase in the number of trotting permits. Possibly in the not distant future those desirous of having trotting meetings might consider it worth while approaching the Government to ascertain what chances there were of an increase in permits. Perhaps at the coining elections candidates would be asked whether they would assist in raising the number of trotting permits so that they would equal tho number of galloping permits. Under the present legislation this could not be done.
