ELECTRIC LIGHT FOR SUMNER.
To the Editor of THE SUN. Sir, —On reading the report of the proceedings of the Christchurch City Council held on Monday, 1 was much pleased to see the discussion on the qucs* tion of electric light supply for Sumner, and I am sure that the Borough Council deserves the thanks of the ratepayers of Sumner for having brought the matter before the Christchurch City Council. I am not interested in the question of etiquette between the two councils, but I am interested in the question of getting an electric light service for Sumner, and the discussion that has taken place has served to show the ratepayers of Sumner that there is need to be on the alert, and not allow their council to enter into any arrangements without the full knowledge of the ratepayers. It has been clearly shown that Eedeliffs (part of Sumner) is paying a much higher price for electric light than it should, and it therefore behoves the Sumner ratepayers to see that they are not treated in the same way. We have had quite sufficient experience of the gas farce in Sumner to make as careful that no mistake is made with regard to the electric light. Might I suggest that the gentlemen who are moving in the matter request the Mayor of Sumner to call a meeting of ratepapers together to discuss the matter, and invite the City Council’s engineer to be present, so that he may hear both sides of the question before deciding where the supply shall come through.—l am, etc., BATEPAYEB.
