A SPURT NEEDED.

HELPING THE SOLDIERS. THE Y.M.C.A. WAR FUND. NORTH ISLAND CATCHING UP. Unless the South Island is content to till second place to the North Island in the raising of funds for the most practical assistance that can be given Jo the Dominion’s soldiers, it will have to put on a spurt in its efforts to get its quota for Red Triangle Day. At the present time the South Island is leading in the campaign to raise £IOO,OOO to enable the Y.M.C.A. to carry on for another year its splendid work for New Zealanders at the front. But the North Island is running a canny race; lately it has been letting the South Island make the pace, but it is now mustering all its energy for the sprint down the straight. Red Triangle Day is close at hand, for it falls on Friday. This morning, the South Island led by more than £3OOO, according to telegraphic advice from Wellington, but the North Island anticipated that it would regain the lead by means of further large sums from Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa. The figures supplied from Wellington give the South Island total as £28,290, and the North Island as £25,900, but the latter does not include Auckland, and the detailed figures for the other districts are incomplete. It is very evident, however, that the South Island cannot afford to relax its efforts in the slightest if it is to finish as a winner. The Christchurch Citizens’ Committee still requires close on £4OOO before it can reach its quota of £15,000. Of the tremendous value of the Y.M.C.A.’s war organisation instances have been given over and over again. Soldiers still at the front are full of gratitude to it. The appreciation of returned soldiers is shown by the fact that the National secretary of the Y.M.C.A. has received a letter from Mr Douglas Seymour, general secretary of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association, containing the following:— “The executive has decided to give its very cordial support to your Red Triangle Day efforts, and commends the campaign to the support of all Returned Soldiers’ Associations, and all returned soldiers throughout New Zealand. Nearly every returned soldier has at some time come into contact with the work of the Y.M.C.A., and the executive trusts that your organisation will be completely successful in its efforts.”
