WOOLSTON BOROUGH.

MEETING OF COUNCIL.

The Woolston Borough Council met last evening, when there were present: The Mayor (Mr McGregor B. Wright), Crs D. Meßae, T. Champ, L. Hart, T. Radcliffe, W. J. Trerise, J. G. A. Roberts, G. Borrows, G. W. White, and J. Hobson.

The Electrical Committee reported that pending financial arrangements, the appointment of a wireman had been postponed, but that would not interfere with the wiring of private houses.— The report was adopted.

The financial statement showed bank balance £1266 18/2, temporary loans £679 18/1. Accounts amounting to £ll4 7/3 were passed for payment. The Mayor reported that he and the town clerk had attended the conference held in connection with the pollution of the Heatheote River, and to a certain extent it was private. The outcoma of the conference was that the rej>resentative of the Woolston Tanneries, Ltd., had admitted the nuisance arising from trade waste, and had promised to install a system for abating the nuisance, the work to be put in hand at once and completed within six months. The representatives of the other industries had undertaken to install similar systems if that put in by the Tanneries Company proved a success. The system was to bo installed under the supervision of the Health Officer, Dr. Chesson.—The Mayor's report was received. The Inspector of Dairies wrote stating that the dairy complained of at the corner of Ferry Road and Smith Street was to be dealt with, and would be transferred to a new building. Mr J. D. Eraser, who at last meeting of the council wrote strongly protesting against his parents being sued for rates, again wrote admitting that the language he had used in that letter was rather strong. He wished to express regret, although he maintained that the interests of those at the front should be jealously guarded by local bodies.
