ILLEGAL LOTTERY.

STOPPED BY THE POLICE. Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 21. Clarence Russell ami William A. Boyd were charged to-day with conducting an illegal lottery at the Auckland Show. Evidence was given that the accused offered to conduct a surprise packet scheme in aid of the "Save the Babies" Fund, the chairman of the fund accepting the offer but telling the accused they must themselves obtain permits. This they failed to do. The accused wore masks and fancy costumes, and asserted that the packets contained winning numbers in the proportion of 00/- for every 100 sold. Complaints were made to the police that a few people seemed to be gaining all the prizes, and the police stop2>ed the sale, impounding £l7 18/- in a box containing the percentage for the fund. The police stated that Russell and Boyd had previous records of offences. Bovd was fined £2, and Russell £l.
