A SHIP’S FIREMAN.
“I don’t catch you,” said James Smith in the Mafdst role’s Court this morning before ah - Wyvern Wilson, S.M., when the clerk read out a dial Sc against him of failing to enrol under the provisions of the Military Service Act,
The charge was repealed. Accused said he was a ship’s fireman, and thought he was exempt. Detective (Umriermain, of LyltelSon. said that tb • man had been arrested in Lyttelton for drunkenness, and on going throng!' his papers he found that he eamc from, San Franeiseo in the latter part of April, and was discharged from his ship at Wellington on April 27. When asked if ho had encode : he said that he was an American subject. Subsequently lie said that he was a Canadian. One of his discharge papers said that; he was an incompetent fireman. The union in Lyttelton had objected to his being shipped as a fireman. Tin; Magistrate said that certain occupations were exempt, but if he belonged to one of them lie had to prove it. Accused: I have oP'ered'my services to the I'nilcd States through the American Consul at Dunedin. A fine of lit/- was imposed.
