ASHBURTON.
OPERATIC SOCIETY. From Our Own Oorrespondent. A meeting of the Ashburton Operatic Society was held last evening, Mr Charles Brown presiding over a fair attendance. The report stated that the year had been a successful one, the society 's production of "lotanthe" having been very well received. The balance-sheet showed receipts £454 15/1, and expenditure £17.1 1/-. The sum of £l2O had been donated to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund, and £l3O to the Red Cross. The "lolauthe" account showed receipts £2.'i3 17/4. The resignation of the secretary, Mr P. L. Orr, who is proceeding to camp, was accepted with regret. % The following officers were elected: — President, Mr W. Nosworthv, M.P.; vicepresidents, Messrs l<). Nicoll, G. H. Buchanan, T. Bullock, R. Forsyth, C. Orbell, and the Rev. Nelson Wright; -secretary, Mr IT. J. Chapman; treasurer, Mr F. W. Watt; conductor, Mr 11. A. Humphries; committee, Mesdames Cowan, Crooks, and Chapman, Miss Smith, Messrs Gass, Christmas, Brown, Clarke, and Tucker. It was decided that the opera to be produced next season should be "The I Gondoliers."
