MONTHLY MEETING.
The Christchureh Fire Board met last night, there being present Messrs 11. I Holland (chairman), A. Williams, W. 11. I OoojioVj 11. I'. Hopkins, and .1. F. Urierson. .Messrs Tnrnbull and .(ones wrote re -I gunliug a disputed account, the amount in question being £l4.'The board decided that it could not recede from the position if had taken up, and wovhl l\ withdraw its offer to submit the matter', fo arbitration. .'! The Railway Department wrote de-j dining to pay a retaining fee for firell protection for the Addington Workshops. It was pointed out in discussion j that the shops were outside the fire area, and so would be without protection. i The Public Works Department wrote, stating that, owing to pressure of work, j the Chief Government Electrical Engineer, Mr Parry, could not take part in a proposed conference regarding the effect of the electrical installation on the board's fire alarm svstem, and stating that Mr hj. Kirks would act. It was decided to continue the arrangements for the conference between the board's superintendent, Mr Stark, and Mr Birks. The Executive Committee reported] that in response to an urgent request from the Kaiapoi Borough Council for! loan of the steatn lire pump, their engine having broken down, it had been resolved to lend the Deluge at £lO per month, plus expenses and damage, if any. The report was adopted. The superintendent's report stated I that the number of calls received by the brigade between April l.'i and May ! •': was four, -viz., one outside the fire 'listrict, one chimney tire, and two actual fires in the city. The estimated total lire loss was £2L!(i. iho insurances on ! buildings ami contents £100(1, and the! estimated value of property involved .til 7.". The efficiency of the brigade! remained the same, and the conduct of I the men very satisfactory. The super! intendeut further stated that he hail been informed thai if was the intention of the City Council to (ill in the : ! tank in front of Ooss's timber mill, and 1 he desired to record his disapproval, as' these anxilliary water supplies were; very valuable in case.the city high pressure was low, or cut off at any time; through unforeseen circumstances. Discussing the matter. Mr Hopkins! moved: ''That the board record its I I protest against the action of tie' City Council in tilling in these tanks. Ail- W. [f. Cooper, who until recently j was a member of the Works Committee : of the council, explained that the action ' of the council had been dictated by a desire to avoid accidents. Drowning accidents had occurred in these tanks, i After further discussion, it was sug gested that the tanks might be covered I in with wire netting, and it was decided! to alter the motion in the direction of re- j spectifuliv asking tiie council to recoil- ; sbler its decision. The superintendent's report also outlined a scheme for the extension of the!
lire area to cover Kortli Linwood, North Richmond, Avonside, oud North East St. Albans. Jt was decided to hold the matter over for further consideration. The rest of the report was then adopted. Accounts amounting to £425 J!)/(> wore passed fiii' payment.
