TRAMWAY SMASH.
AUCKLAND ACCIDENT. CAUSED BY SLEEPY MOTORMAN. rress Association. AUCKLAND, March 5. An inquiry was held by the Tramway Company with regard to the accident in Khyber Pass Road on February 21, when a car out of control left the rails and made a breach between a hotel and a bank at Newmarket.
The motorman in charge of the car stated that he was tired, having been awake at 4 a.m. There had been a cyclonic storm, which damaged his house, and necessitated the shifting of the furniture. He went on duty for the Tramway Company between 3 and 4 p.m. On the trip down Khyber Pass at midnight he dosed, and remembered nothing that occurred until he was thrown from his seat when the car jumped the points. The Tramway Company's manager is satisfied that the inquiry disclosed the true cause of the accident. He states that the motorman is one of the company's most trusted employees.
