SCHOOL COMMITTEES
WEST CHRISTCHUKCH. The monthly meeting of the West Christchurch District High School Comj mittoe was held on Wednesday. PreI sent: —Dr Chilton (chairman), Messrs |E Parlane, (i. Barrel), W. B. Bnltitu.de, land 11. S. Witham. The chairman wcl- : corned Mr Witham as a member of the committee. Circulars were received from the board in reference to school cleanling and ventilation, and also indicating ' a probable curtailment of the incidental J allowance. It was decided to protest against any reduction of the incidental grant. The board having granted Mr : \V. B. Rule leave of absence, to enable him to join the Reinforcements, the eomI mittce wished him a successful career, 'and a speedy and safe return. After further consideration, it was agreed to 'adopt the suggestion that the majority of the scholars in the Secondary : Department, should have a uniform suit, | the head master a ndthe chairman to select ! the material. The headmaster reported an improved attendance. In the primary department there were 7'2'A on the roll, and an average attendance of 660.6, and
in the Secondary Department a roll num- | ber of 240 with an average attendance I of 225.75. The chairman and ! the headmaster having drawn up a ; scheme for the rebuilding of the school, j it was agreed to forward it to the Board i of Education. i BECKENHAM. The usual monthly meeting of the ißeekenham School Committee was held on the iOth inst., when there was a full i attendance of members, together with I the headmaster. During the evening j occasion was taken to bid farewell to Corporal S. C. Anderson, who is down j on final leave. The chairman (Mr \V. ■ W. Charters) spoke of the many sterling qualities of Mr Anderson. He had been a member of the committee since its inception, and had given loyal support to every matter that had been for the betterment of the school anil district. On behalf of the committee, the chairman presented Corporal Anderson I with a fountain pen. The question of j incidental allowances to school committees was considered. Taking into consideration the increased expenditure (more particularly to this, a new school i, it was almost impossible for any committee to meet its obligations. The committee was in full sympathy with the Education Board over this matter, and was ready to take any measure to combat the Government, even to the extent of resigning and throwing the whole matter on the department.
